This issue of The Orthodox Word features an article by Fr. Irenei (Steenberg) on the proper understanding of the service known as the Rite of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, which is celebrated in some cathedrals on the first Sunday of Great Lent. Fr. Irenei traces the history of this unique rite and takes the reader through the entire service, particularly as it is celebrated in the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. Explanations are given as to how the rite functions as a definition of the Orthodox Faith, and how it lovingly summons those who have fallen away from this Faith to return to its fullness.
Also included in this issue is an article by St. Theophan the Recluse, “The Rite of Orthodoxy,” which was written to address critics of this service in nineteenth-century Russia.
