Vol. 55, No. 5 (328) September-October, 2019
Blessed Theophylact served as archbishop of Ochrid and All Bulgaria during the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. His Explanation of the New Testament has served for centuries as one of the most authoritative and accessible scriptural commentaries available, being drawn from the works of previous Holy Fathers, especially those of St. John Chrysostom. In this issue of The Orthodox Word we present the first chapter of the saint’s commentary on the Apostle Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians. We will be serializing the commentary to this epistle in future issues and will eventually publish the complete commentary in our Chrysostom Press series.
This is followed by a brief article by St. Nectarios of Pentopolis: “Mothers and the Education of Children,” which discusses the critical importance of a proper upbringing in order to give a child the best possible chance to live a virtuous Christian life.
The issue concludes with “Four Most Beneficial Chapters on Thoughts,” by St. Nikodemos the Hagiorite: a penetrating treatise on the origins of sin within the realm of our thoughts, and the cures available to us, which also lie within this realm.
